Getting Started

Change your Start Page Settings

Changing settings of elements on your Start page can be done from the Settings page, you'll find the link in the top right and bottom right corner of your start page.

On this page you can change:

  • Language (of searchmaze interface)
  • The default search engine you would like to use
  • Number of links to show in your start page lists
  • Which RSS News feeds to include on your page and how many items per feed to show.

Try adding a news feed to you page now. Select and copy this address:

http://www.microsite.reuters.com/rss/topNews
Go to the Settings page and add the address to the list. Click "Save Settings". A new link will appear that leads back to your start page. Click it and find the news on your page.

Change your Toolbar Settings

You can change your toolbar functions and appearance by opening the Searchmaze menu (the first button on your toolbar) and choosing "Toolbar Options and Customization".

On this page you can choose which buttons and menu's you want to display in the toolbar. Also, you can change search box width and search behaviour here

There are more functions available in your toolbar than there is room to display them all. We have set up the toolbar to display those features we think will be most useful to you, but you may want to disable stuff you don't use and enable different buttons instead.

For example, if you don't have any custom search engines you want to add, you can disable the "Personal" menu to save some space in your toolbar. Then you could set your Search box width to "Impressive" for that extra spacy search feeling :)

Try changing some buttons now.

Use your Infosphere

Once you start surfing the web, searchmaze will automatically start remembering the pages you visit. After a while (updates are run every 5 minutes) you will start seeing sites appear in your Favorites list on your Start Page. Check out the "My Sites" button on your toolbar to access this list also.

The lists are created and ranked based on how much you use a particular site. You cannot manually add a site to this list like your Internet Explorer favorites or Firefox Bookmarks, but you can change the number of sites that will display by changing it on the Settings page.

Don't worry if the sites that show up in your favorites at first aren't in fact your favorites. The infosphere needs some time to accurately judge which pages you use most, so the list should get better over time.

To access the full list of sites or to do a keyword search on documents in your infosphere, click the more link at the top right corner of the favorite list.

If you want to disable the infosphere feature (and stop transmitting usage data) go to the Toolbar Options page (from above) and select the "Show Infosphere Logging button". A new button on the Toolbar will say "On". Click to change it. The infosphere feature will be turned off in all new Internet Explorer windows. Click the button again to reactive your infosphere.

Discover the Power

Be sure to click around and take a look at all of the menu's in the toolbar, you'll be surprised at what you can search directly from now on.

You can customize the menu's by bringing much used resources to the top level of a menu. For example. If you use Google.es a lot (Google in Spanish), you can move that item from Search/Regional/Spain to the Top level of the search menu for faster access. To do this just Click the "Add/Edit Personal Links" item in one of the Toolbar menu's.

Also, all the search engines and resources that can be selected through the menu's, can also be triggered by typing a smart keyword. This will give you even faster access to you favorite search sources.

Note the pin icon next to the search box in your toolbar. Once you have preformed a search, this menu will always contain the last results of that search. This way you can easily zap from one result to the next. (Hover over a result with your mouse to see the site description)

You'll discover even more handy features in the toolbar, like a Pop up Blocker that will get rid of annoying ads, Highlight and word-find buttons, and links to Site information, Translations and Dictionaries.

Search for the Future

Searchmaze is still in development, but we feel there is enough stuff working to open the site for beta testing and let you enjoy the functionality now.

The current Searchmaze Search Result page is a meta engine (like Dogpile.com or Metacrawler.com) that looks to other search engines for it's results (like Yahoo or Google). It combines results from a few large search engines (Yahoo, Teoma) with hits from your infosphere (sites that you've visited before), keyword suggestions and deep links to other search engines that could have more relevant results for your search. Read more about it here.

Of course, with Searchmaze you are free to use any search engine result screen you want (just change your default search engine on the Settings page), but keep an eye on this one as we'll be making many improvements in the coming months.
